One thing about choosing and picking the right down jacket: consider it almost as if you were buying a car!
OK, I might be exaggerating a bit but honestly this garment is very serious investment and if you live in a cold climate where you get to have freezing temperatures, plus lots of snow - do consider getting the very best quality you can afford.
The reason is quite simple - you want to wear this jacket to prevent cold coming through the fabric, so to keep you warm.
More affordable versions are made of basic fabrics and lined with polyester filing which will add to fluffiness of the jacket but the level of cold protection is lower as the fabric is not capable to prevent cold air breezing through. These lighter versions are on the other hand very handy if you don't spend much time outside but rather have short commutes from your home to car to work, mall or just running errands.
Costly models ah well...cost for a reason: there is a lot of smart work build inside and outside of the jacket. Outer material is often waterproof and windproof so this will instantly block cold going through. Lining will be filled with down - and the quality of it can greatly affect the price. Better quality goose feather is very desirable as they are very soft and light in weight. Cheaper, uncleaned, feather can sometime punch the lining and after you have been wearing the jacket for some time - it will start falling out. And when that happens do know that you will be getting rid off it as it will look messy.
